The Politics of Self-Interest: Unmasking the False Zoning Narrative Against Senator Seriake Dickson.
By Gabriel Ukuta
In the build-up to the 2027 general elections, certain political actors in Bayelsa West have begun to peddle claims of a so-called “zoning agreement” aimed at discrediting Senator Henry Seriake Dickson’s reelection bid. While they attempt to cloak their motives in the language of fairness and balance, it is increasingly clear that these politicians are driven not by the collective good of Bayelsa West, but by narrow, selfish interests.
The truth remains that Bayelsa West has, for decades, been one of the most politically stable and well-represented senatorial districts in the state. Under the leadership of Senator Seriake Dickson a two-term former governor and a serving senator the people have enjoyed quality representation anchored on vision, courage, and an unrelenting commitment to development. His track record in the National Assembly speaks volumes: from legislative advocacy and infrastructure development to educational scholarships, empowerment programmes, and health interventions.
It is therefore curious and indeed suspicious that at a time when Bayelsa West should be consolidating on these gains and strategizing toward producing a governor in 2027, a few self-serving individuals have chosen to sow seeds of division through false narratives. Instead of uniting the zone for greater political relevance, they are aligning with opposition forces outside the state, plotting to “retire” a man who has given his all to the growth and stability of the Ijaw nation.
This alliance with external political actors betrays the real motive behind the so-called zoning agitation. It is not about equity or justice; it is about personal ambition. Those pushing the narrative of zoning are individuals who see Senator Dickson’s towering political profile as an obstacle to their aspirations. They understand that his enduring popularity, credibility, and proven performance make him the natural choice of the people, hence their desperate attempt to weaken his base by creating artificial political tension.
Bayelsa West cannot afford to sacrifice experience, competence, and tested leadership on the altar of political greed. The people of Sagbama and Ekeremor know too well the difference between empty promises and genuine service. They have seen how Senator Dickson’s representation has translated into real projects, empowerment, and visible development.
As 2027 approaches, the people of Bayelsa West must stay vigilant and reject the propaganda of those who wish to divide them for their own benefit. Zoning or no zoning, what truly matters is quality representation and Senator Seriake Dickson remains a symbol of that. His consistency, courage, and passion for the welfare of his people continue to speak louder than the falsehoods of political opportunists.
The attempt to “retire” Senator Dickson is not just an attack on one man; it is an attack on the progress and stability of Bayelsa West. But, as always, truth and performance will prevail over propaganda. The people know their leader. They know who has stood by them through thick and thin. And when the time comes, they will speak loudly through the ballot not in the language of zoning, but in the language of gratitude, loyalty, and continuity.
